8-bit Left 4 Dead leaves modernity behind
by Mike on Nov.16, 2009, under Mods, NES, Nes Games, Weird
Thanks to Eric Ruth and his PixelForce NES “de-make” of Left 4 Dead, we now have an idea of what the zombie apocalypse simulator would have been like had it released in the ’80s. Valve is apparently aware of the project and finds the concept “hilarious.” Ruth reveals that he plans to release the full game as a free download in early January 2010 for PC. It features all the campaigns from the original game, including 8-bit incarnations of the special infected, for two players to play through — it is a NES game after all, fancy four-player didn’t exist.

by Mike on Oct.26, 2009, under Mods, SNES
Have you always wished that you could develop games for the Super Nintendo but couldn’t because you were only 4 years old when it was released in 1990? Here’s a second chance.

Portable NES modded into a cartridge, hearts modded into love
by Mike on Oct.13, 2009, under Mods, NES
We’ve seen NES mods that incorporate a screen and controls into a cartridge in the past, but this example from Airz in BenHeck’s forums is just so clean and well-polished that we had to give it some love. Inside Airz says it’s just a generic Chinese media player that can play NES, Gameboy, and Gameboy Color ROMs, along with the relevant controller bits, a 2.8-inch LCD, 4GB of storage, and a rechargeable battery. Oh, and if you’re feeling particularly retro, you can hook it up over TV-out and play on the big screen. Not bad — and it’s for sale

Portable SNES mod is slick enough to hit retail
by Mike on Aug.14, 2009, under Mods, SNES
Sometimes mods go to such lengths that words like ‘homebrewed’ and ‘DIY’ no longer do them justice. Presenting the Nintendo SNES Portable. Not the first, and probably not the last of its kind, this bad boy mobilizes Nintendo’s venerable console with a few buttons from a PSOne controller and a ridiculously detailed skinning job — yes, even the packaging gets a makeover.

Gameboy Sculpting: “Bricking” Your DMG
by Jeromy on Jul.08, 2009, under Gameboy, Mods
Ever wanted to do something to your DMG besides paint it? Me too, so I busted out my sculpting tools today and some Aves Apoxie Sculpt and went to town. My original idea was to just do some red Mario style bricks, but in tradition of the DMG’s nickname “Grey Brick” I decided to do just that.

This guy refers to his Gameboy as DMG and say:
“The original Gameboy is Model number DMG-01. It stands for Dot Matrix Gameboy. In the game community we simply refer to them as DMG’s as apposed to ‘Original Gameboy’ or ‘Classic Gameboy‘”
I’ve never seen it referred to as “DMG” I think this guy is making shit up.

NES Controller Turned Wireless Doorbell
by Jeromy on Jun.28, 2009, under Mods, NES
Not your standard NES controller mod, this Nintendo fan decided to turn his into a wireless doorbell. This was accomplished by gutting the controller, hacking a wireless doorbell system, and then mounting the receiver/LED inside. Video after the break.
